You already know that running for fitness is a good thing to do.
So why are you spending so much of your time laying around, watching too much TV and feeling guilty about it?
Do you spend too much time on your computer looking at the internet or playing video games.
Are you feeling tired, worn out and feeling just plain bad about yourself when you know that you could and should be doing something more to take care of yourself?
Maybe you've tried lifting weights and found that it failed to capture your interest, causing you to quit out of boredom.
If you're not fit and you're not happy with yourself, then maybe it's time you got up and began running for fitness!
Why Run for Fitness?
Running is a great form of exercise, since it works almost every muscle group in your body, including the most important muscle of all: your heart! Running is the best type of exercise for your circulatory and respiratory systems.
Running for fitness provides you with a full body workout - and it's a great way to relax. Many people find running to be a very calming activity; some even claim that they do some of their best thinking while they run.
How to Get Started with Running for Fitness
Running isn't just one of the best things you can do to improve your health, get into better shape and to extend your lifespan; it's also one of the cheapest and easiest kinds of exercise you could choose to do.
You just need a pair of quality running shoes, some comfortable running clothes and a little motivation to improve your quality of life - and then all you need is to get up, get out there and run!
It's important to start small when you begin running for fitness. When you're just getting started, it's best to run no more than three times a week, since it can tend to make you sore if you're not used to running.
However, there's also a way to make things easier on yourself: using a beginners running program that focuses on alternating running and walking.
These beginners programs are designed for those who are not yet experienced runners and alternate between waling and running. This is a program which works well for those just getting started in running for fitness - and they're quite popular with novice runners as well.
If you're not using a running program, then take care not to overextend yourself and build up slowly. Check out this article about increasing mileage safely.
What Are Good Places to Run for Fitness?
One place where you can run for fitness is in the great outdoors if you happen to live in the country or near a park; of course, city streets are also a perfectly good place to run! You can also use a treadmill at home or at the gym, which allows you to read, watch television or do other things while you run.
I used to run on an indoor track at a gym and would watch people running on treadmills or using stationary cycles while reading, studying or even sewing; you can definitely combine running for fitness with other activities if you so choose. How about learning a language via your iPod?
Staying Motivated with Running for Fitness
Running can be a challenging thing, so you need to stay motivated. You'll need to rely on your own willpower and hopefully the support of friends and family to get up and out there on a regular basis, especially as you begin. Stick with it and the rewards will make it more than worth the effort.
One way to stay motivated as you get started running for fitness is to set some realistic short term and long term goals for yourself.
For example, you may decide that your goal is to lose five pounds in three months and 10 pounds in six months; you could also set goals in terms of distances you'd like to be able to run. Whatever your goals, try to get your friends and family to provide their moral support to help you reach them.
One way to keep up your motivation is to have a source of good information about running, such as a newsletter which provides you with great running tips.
Running for fitness is really the best way to get in shape; you don't need expensive exercise gear or weight loss pills you see advertised everywhere.
Weight loss is not in a magic pill, otherwise sixty per cent of our country would not be obese!
Do something that will help you - start running for fitness - and soon you will enjoy seeing the results!
