One book I think every marathon runner should get is Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger and Douglas.
As a running enthusiast, I've joined a few local marathons and was disappointed with my pace and my run-and-rest intervals despite several years of running experience.
Every marathon just ended in disaster from about mile 16 to mile 22. There had not been one that I could finish without having to stop for a walk. Running is just a hobby, but I am a competitive person who badly wants to achieve his goals.
I can say that Advanced Marathoning has gotten me ready to run a marathon properly. The training is a little more than I was used to, but it is also the style of running training they ask you to do. Some weeks actually seemed to be lighter than what I used to be doing.
I'm no running expert, but I learned a lot of fundamental running principles in this book and I can confidently say that my pace and running have definitely gone to a whole new level. In my opinion, Pfitzinger and Douglas have probably written the best book there is about running a marathon.
I would recommend this book to marathon enthusiasts and to anyone who is looking to do marathons.

Hi there,
Thanks for your Advanced Marathoning book review. I agree, I like the book very much. It just comes to show that it pays off to get books written by people who have been there and done that before.
